Backstory: The daughter of two distinguished Rooters, Dairmida was born to be a Gatherer. Her parents, religious minorities, hid their true identities from other Guilders and, convinced they would never advance within a guild that favored heavy biases, they secretly used their "special skills" to advance themselves. Their self-made good fortunes gave them a desirable apartment within the guild and enough coin to support their only child. In secret they took their young daughter down to the Wylds 8 times a year to clebrate the earth festivals, where they taught her the ways of the old Goddess, and how to not just survive, but thrive among the trees and roots and wild things of the earth. On one Mean Earraigh they had presented her with a wolf pup, a sibling, to ease the lonliness of being an only child so often left alone and for sometimes several days at a time. Devorar, as the wolf would come to be known, comforted her, protected her. Life was a dream waking, until one hot, autumn night that sighed with finality.
Dairmida heard little of what happened under that harvest moon, her parents loyal friends in the guild had seen to that with a fierceness, but her dreams had whispered the thousand tiny details of it- how they fell, grasping hands and ripping nails. How even as they spiraled down, they refused to scream, refused to simply fall. They were seasoned and hardened Rooters, and did not believe a Gatherer should die with a scream in their throats. "When they fall", her father's greatest friend Lucio Rossi had once said, "you can always sort out the Gatherers from the rest." The Gatherers had used up their lifetime's supply of screams long before that point.
In her dreams she heard her name on her mother's lips, a small sound, a sigh of regret. In that moment just before waking, just before the storm clouds broke and she was thrust violently back into her waking prison, she would see high above the whipping winds and tattered wisps of frayed rope. She would see two men on the Colossus high above. Fabian Rosetto and Aldo Brandino, their faces all sneers and satisfaction.
In the endless, meaningless days that followed she lived but for one thing. A reckoning.
